Classes are almost over, which means we can start slacking more than we did during the semester if that is possible. So over winter break, remember, even though Vermont is disgustingly cold, there's always ski season. This shot was taken out west at Jackson Hole, but thanks to the miracle of snowmaking, we have some decent days on the mountain out here as well.

Leddy Beach

Furthur north along the coast from North Beach, is Leddy Beach. It's much less crowded than North beach and is only a 2 minute drive furthur up the road. The beach also has an interesting coastline where the trees grow in the sand right up to the edge of the lake. Makes for some really interesting scenery. This photo was taken during sunset.

This Vermont sunrise was just very interesting. The shape of the smaller swirling dotted clouds had a really cool effect while below it the glowing orange spread and brought the daylight to Burlington.

While getting the pictures I needed for our PowerPoint project, I took some photos on campus. This is on the 5th floor of Old Mill, where they have a lot of awesome black and white pictures of the reconstruction of the building. (I think the building has burnt down a number of times?)

This photo was taken looking at the bottom of a lake in Maine. I learned that the lighting that appears on the lake bottom, and any light that shows through a liquid substance and has that rippling effect, is known as caustic lighting. There are a few stubborn leaves floating on the surface...

In Vermont Halloween spirit we carved a "Wicked" pumpkin. Despite having about 4 people cutting on it at once we managed not to mangle it too much.

King of the Mountain

This weekend provided us with one of the last weekends we'll see up here without snow or freezing conditions. I took the opportunity for enjoying the outdoors, and hiked Mount Madonna which is adjacent to Mount Mansfield. The hike takes about 2.5-3 hours total, and upon reaching the top, you'll find this view pictured above. On the top of this peak, there lies Stirling Pond. I reccomend the hike to catch a glimpse of this interesting phenomenon. The King of the Mountain.

Halloween Costume Challenge

I came across a blog posting earlier by The Phantom Super Shadow Friends. "Celebrating" addressed the trend of college students on Halloween to dress up, drink until they puke, and spend the next day recovering regardless of what they were supposed to do. So this year I'm going to try to remember some of my trick or treating and the costumes that made the night worth it. Last year my friend took the prize hands down.

I'm extending a challenge to everyone: Go out on Halloween and find the most ridiculous and creative costumes. Send your pictures to blazahblaze@yahoo.com byFriday the 4th of November. I'll post all of the entries and we'll put them to a vote. The winner receives absolutely nothing, mainly because we have nothing to give. Let it snow?

When I saw this, it made me think of the 'the coming winter' blog, so in spirit of that, I thought I'd post. Maybe not so much in spirit, depending on your view of winter. This was my kitchen door one night after a snow storm. We had probably just turned on the outside light to see how much had accumulated, and judging by the door it looks like a decent amount.

I found some old pictures I had taken and remembered how much I loved black and white photographs. (My scanner cut off the white border unfortunately, - an effect I like on b&w pictures) When I went home one weekend, my parents were having some friends over and I snapped this of the table before we sat down to eat. My favorite part is the three wine glasses, caught in the dark corner on the left.

The Coming Winter

This shot is actually a Photoshop-ed composite of 6 separate digital photos. They were taken last winter by a friend, and I assembled them into this continuous format. With all the rain we've seen this fall, I keep thinking about the coming snow. This photo captures some of the magic of the winter. I believe its Tuckerman's Gorge in New Hampshire.

So I've given up on the rain stopping and decided to shoot with the weather we have. These were captured while wandering campus after a shower hoping that I didn't get drenched when the rain started again. Fortunately it held off long enough for me to get a few good shots in.

Hockey

Well UVM's first hockey game turns out an amazing 10-3 victory and the first game I can remember that was into double digits. The action was fast and furious, with something on the order of 4 major (5 minute) penalties and a game ejection for one player. Here's a shot of some fast moving action along the boards.

The Colors of Autumn

This photo was taken in Chester, Vermont, which is south of Burlington. Chester has some great hiking trails which are made very scenic by the changing of the leaves. Annually, this time of year brings a great amount of tourism up to Vermont and it's neighboring states. The abundance, variety and density of trees here provides for an explosive transition from Fall to Winter, and the colors are second to none here.

This weekend I decided to sneak my way out of town before all the parents showed up for homecoming. So, I headed back to Hudson, MA for the first annual Columbus Day Pub Crawl. It was by far one of the most depressing events of my life, and I blame my friend Devon for ever suggesting it. If I wanted to go to a bar where middle aged men hit on my girlfriends I would have stayed here at Finnigans or the OP. But anyway, as long as you guys promise not to stalk me, I'll show you the home of El Guapo. Contrary to popular believe, it's not Venezuela. Sorry, I couldn't find the zoom on my camera.

I was trying to take pictures of the immediate things around me, - this is of a poster in my living room, shadowed by a plant. I like the colors - the yellow and the green you can find in both objects. In the actual image, the texture of the plant is much more visible.

Tree People

Going along with the previous post here are some interesting tree people shots. This was taken during a walk through Centennial Woods; I came across hardcore UVM tree climbers who were happy to show off their stuff. You never know what you're going to find when you walk around UVM :-)

This tree has undergone some punishment, but still lives to show its scars of deformation. I've never seen a branch thats bent like this one is, in acute angles. Kind of un-organic looking.

Fountain

Just a picture of the fountain on campus. My sister had taken one similar to this, only it was in Paris, and it was at the Louvre and you could see the Eiffel Tower behind the fountain... so it was a much more interesting shot but it kind of has that same idea.

Bike Race

This was a bike race they had around Church street a month or so ago. It was actually a cool sight to see all of them go by, 20 - 30? miles per hour, but I kind of thought driving the beamer that drove before them would be a lot more fun

I created this outdoor piece in the spirit of the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy, an artist who expands upon and explores the forms and ideas found in nature. His compostions are composed from natural materials he collects outdoors, and arranges to create a message or idea. I did this in recognizing and arranging some of the nature and enviroronment here at UVM.

Who's Your Papi?

It's that time of year again. October is when Red Sox fans stop changing their underwear because they think it's going to send Manny into a slump, and Yankee fans come out of the woodwork because apparently being from Connecticut makes you a New Yorker. So trust me, next Sunday when they play the last regular season game of the year, I'll be sitting in the same chair I've watched the last 161 games in, with a beer and a foul stench. But for those of you who were here last year, let's reflect. There are ways to celebrate, and ways to get kicked out of school. I looked up this picture from the UVM Police Services Website. I remember going to class the day after the email was sent out, and everyone in the classroom was laughing at the one kid who's face was in every photo. So this year, stay home, take a few extra shots and sleep through classes on Monday.

An image from Redstone Green, assuming you're not a freshman you probably know from when. If you are a freshman UVM riot police took to the Green after the Red Sox's games last semester in response to a riot caused by the Red Sox's defeating the Yankees. As an avid photographer I watched the Channel 3 case with interest as it presents many interesting ramifications for people in my shoes (professionally or as a citizen).

Three Elements

Looking West across Lake Champlain towards New York gives you a vibrant blend of three natural elements. The water, mountains and sky are juxtaposed in an interesting blend of color and texture. As the light fades, their distinctions blur, and a deep blue unites them for the night.

The Colors of Burlington

I don't know if this belongs here or at Sanitary Napkin. If anyone ever tells you that drugs don't have long lasting effects, they're a liar. You may wind up painting your house one of these obnoxious colors.

I was on a ride around the old North End when I came across these houses. They're all on the same block. The challenge is extended to anyone who can find more ridiculous colors.

I can't actually decide how much I like this picture, (it seems a little boring, although I do love the effect of the flame) but after seeing the other picture taken with a camera phone, it made me curious to see what kind of shots I could take.

To fit in with our campus theme, here is just a candle sitting on top of a picture frame, illuminating a UVM exit sign I've had from my dorm days.

Fire in the Sky

The transition between the Vermont day and night is occasionally accompanied by a display like the one above. Both the intensity of the various colors, and the contrast between the fiery oranges and the cool blues, make this Westward-facing photo seem almost surreal.

Catching the Light

As the days grow shorter, and the temperature begins to descend, UVMers are making all attempts to get the most out of the outdoors before the long winter ahead. Surrounded by contrasting landscapes, from trails into the mountains, to cliffs, to beaches, and farmlands, the people of Burlington have much to explore and observe. I hope through this and the posts to come, to give a glimpse of the variety of the nature in which we are immersed. Above, a few students are dwarfed by the army of fir trees that surround them.

UVM Soccer

The New Photo Media...

After looking at some of the other photo posts I got to thinking about the different reasons we take photos. We take them to help preserve memories, to tell a story, or sometimes at 4 in the morning on a Saturday because we know we'd never remember otherwise. And anybody can take a picture, even my mom who still doesn't know how to turn on our cable box. But, we did manage to teach her how to use her cell phone and the camera on it. I know the camera phone gets obnoxious, but you have to admit, it is convenient. More often than not, when you want to take a picture of something you don't have a camera with you. So anyway, what I'm getting at is that my mom sent me this picture she took with her phone. It's always a nice surprise to flip open your phone in the middle of class and get to see one of your friends from home. His name is Buddy, he's a youthful 12, and even though it looks like he's smoking a giant cigar in the picture, my mom assures me it was the bone I gave him before I headed back up here.

The Williams Art Hell

I love discovering the little things people tend to walk right past. In this case it's a not so little thing. This carved stone archway leads out from Williams Hall and very few people I've talked to even know it's there. There must be a good story behind its creation but no one I've talked to can shed any light on it. Anyone know?
